As two software developers who work full time during the week, we wanted a business and hobby that we would enjoy while obtaining the income and tax benefits. In the fall of 2004, we decided to start an alpaca business, called Criative Acres, and have never looked back. We made our first purchase of 3 females and 2 males by November of that year. Since we liked the easy marketability and lure of the teddy bear looking Huayacas, and liked the uniqueness of the pencil locked Suris, we purchased both types of alpacas. With crias being born on the farm and additional purchases throughout the year, we more than doubled our farm size in less than one year.
